Mushroom compost is made from agricultural materials, such as hay, straw, straw horse bedding, poultry litter, cottonseed meal, cocoa shells, and gypsum. Sphagnum peat moss adds to the organic nature of the substrate, providing a consistent, formulated, and homogeneous product.

Mushroom compost is also referred to as spent mushroom compost since it is obtained from the remains of mushroom farming. It is mainly used as a mulch and soil conditioner to improve ornamental and vegetable gardens. It has a good alkalinity base to help neutralize the soil.
